The attractive little fishing port of Ullapool, on the shores of Loch Broom,is the largest settlement in Wester Ross.
 ullapool harbour

The grid patterned village, created in 1788 at the height of the herring boom by the British Fisheries Society, is still an important fishing centre as well as being the major tourist centre in the northwest of Scotland and one of the main ferry terminals for the Outer Hebrides. At the height of the busy summer season the town is swamped by visitors passing through on their way to or from Stornaway on Lewis, heading north into the wilds, or south to Inverness. It has excellent tourist amenities and services and relatively good transport links, making it the ideal base for those exploring the northwest coast and a good place to be if the weather is bad. Boat trips in the summer explore the coastwhere there are plenty of seals and sea birds to be seen.you can find out about life in the past here in Ullapool, including the Highland clearances, in the Ullapool Museum close to the harbour.
